Case study: DENMARK.

Wind Energy

  1. Renewable Energy:  has tremendous potential and can be used to produce free source of power just like solar and hydro power. It is cleanest form of renewable energy and is currently used many leading developed and developing nations to fulfill their demand for electricity.

  2. Help to curb harmful greenhouse gas emissions which are the major source of global warming.

  3. The wind is free and with modern technology it can be captured efficiently.

  4. Once the wind turbine is built the energy it produces does not cause green house gases or other pollutants.

  5. Although wind turbines can be very tall each takes up only a small plot of land. This means that the land below can still be used. This is especially the case in agricultural areas as farming can still continue.

  6. Remote areas that are not connected to the electricity power grid can use wind turbines to produce their own supply.

  1. Noise Disturbances: turbines create a lot of noise.  People who live near-by often complaint of huge noise that comes from wind turbines.

  2. Threat to Wildlife: Due to large scale construction of wind turbines on remote location, it could be a threat to wild life near by. Wind turbines in particular can also be harmful to birds and other flying creatures.

  3. The strength of the wind is not constant and it varies from zero to storm force. This means that wind turbines do not produce the same amount of electricity all the time.

  4. Many people feel that the countryside should be left untouched, without these large structures being built. The landscape should left in its natural form for everyone to enjoy. Opponents claim that the windiest sites are AONBs.

  5. Visual pollution- Many people see large wind turbines as unsightly structures. They disfigure the countryside and are generally ugly.

  6. When wind turbines are being manufactured some pollution is produced.

  7. Require large areas to produce energy- can take up to 7000 wind turbines to produce the same amount of energy as 1 nuclear power station.

INFORMATION

Fastest growing renewable energy source. More economical if several turbines in same place- wind farm. Wind energy= pollution free & not global warming.

Europe & N America; wind blows strongly in winter when electricity demand high. Don’t take up space (only 1% land sited), allows farmland or natural habitats to exist.

Electricity by wind energy competitive with coal-fired power plants & cheaper than nuclear fuel. Still not as cheap as gas-fired power stations.
